Having graduated from Huddersfield University with BMus (Hons), Stephen went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music with John Wilson and Ka Kit Tam. At the completion of his studies he was awarded the Post-Graduate Diploma in Performance and the Clifton Helliwell Memorial Prize for Piano. The following Year Stephen worked as an accompanist at Wells Cathedral School, playing for instrumentalists and singers in lessons, concerts, and masterclasses. During this time he performed on regional TV, and also on Classic FM in a broadcast of the Audi Junior Musician of the Year competition. Stephen was also a finalist in the Birmingham accompanist of the Year competition.
Stephen went on to complete a PGCE in Secondary Music and currently combines teaching music and piano, with a busy freelance career as a pianist, accompanist, and musical director. His solo recital work has included performances for the Leicester Music Festival, The Ivy Hotel, London, and The Phoenix Theatre, Leicester. As an accompanist he works with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists and performs duo recitals for music clubs, societies, and hotel functions. Stephen also works as an accompanist for several music schools, and is currently a staff pianist for the Ardingly International Music School, where he works with many outstanding singers and teachers from the leading UK conservatoires.
Stephen works as a Repetiteur and Musical Director for choirs and musical theatre companies across the Midlands. He has a strong passion for musical theatre, and singing, and delivers exciting and dynamic performances with the casts he works with. Recent credits have included productions of 'Les Miserables,' 'Acorn Antiques,' 'Our House,' 'Aspects of Love,' and 'The Full Monty.' He also performs as an orchestral keys player for musicals, performing lead piano parts, as well as orchestral ensemble parts.
Stephen also has a keen interest in jazz and popular music. He works with jazz trios and bands, performing a wide range of jazz standards and contemporary repertoire, and also works regularly with his own jazz group, performing for hotel functions and private parties.
